Part Exchange Explained: How It Works and How to Get the Best Price
Part exchange (or 'px') is the simplest way to change your car: the dealer buys your old car and knocks its value off the price of the one you're buying. One transaction, no listing fees, no strangers at your door, no waiting for a buyer.
How a part exchange valuation works
A dealer values your car on four things: market demand for that model, its age and mileage, its condition inside and out, and its history (service record, MOT history, number of owners, finance status).
Expect a px figure slightly below what you'd get selling privately — that gap is what you're paying for zero hassle and zero risk. A fair dealer will explain how they reached the figure rather than plucking a number from the air.
What if my car has outstanding finance?
This is more common than you'd think, and it's not a problem. The dealer gets a settlement figure from your finance company and pays it off directly. If your car is worth more than the settlement, the difference goes towards your next car. If it's worth less (negative equity), the shortfall is added to the deal — make sure you're comfortable with the maths before signing.
How to get the best part-exchange price
A little preparation genuinely moves the figure:
- Bring the full history: service records, MOT certificates, both keys, the V5C. Missing keys and paperwork cost you money.
- Clean the car properly first — presentation affects perceived condition.
- Fix cheap cosmetic issues: a £15 bulb or wiper blade is better fixed by you than priced in by the dealer.
- Be straight about faults. They'll be found anyway, and honesty keeps the deal smooth.
- Get your settlement figure in advance if you have finance — it speeds everything up.
Part exchange vs selling outright
If you're buying your next car at the same time, px usually wins on convenience and often on tax-free simplicity. If you're not replacing the car, sell it outright instead — we buy cars too, with free collection and instant bank transfer, through our Sell Your Car service.
We take any make or model in part exchange at Status Motor Group — bring your car when you view, and you'll have a firm figure before you decide anything. Or get a free valuation online first.
