Buying a Used Car Online with Home Delivery: How It Actually Works
A growing share of our customers buy without ever visiting the showroom — some from the other end of the country. Done properly, buying a used car online is safe, quick and surprisingly painless. Here's exactly how it works and what your rights are.
Step 1: The video walk-around
Photos flatter; video doesn't. Ask the dealer for a full walk-around video of the actual car — bodywork close-ups, interior, a cold start, the lot. We send these as standard, and it's the single best way to avoid surprises on delivery day.
Ask every question you'd ask in person: tyre depths, service history, any marks. A dealer who answers precisely on camera or in writing is a dealer you can hold to it.
Step 2: Paying safely
Pay by bank transfer to the dealership's business account — confirm the account details by phone with the dealership's main number, not just an email, to rule out interception fraud. A deposit first and balance on delivery is normal and reasonable.
Never pay a private seller or an unverifiable 'dealer' in full before seeing the car. Check the business is real: company registration, landline, physical address, reviews across multiple platforms.
Step 3: Paperwork and delivery
The dealer handles the V5C transfer online with the DVLA — you'll get the new keeper slip and confirmation. You'll need insurance in place from the moment the car is yours, and road tax is set up online in minutes (tax doesn't transfer with the car).
Delivery is either by transporter or driven. Inspect the car against the video before the driver leaves and note anything immediately.
Your rights when buying remotely
Buying at a distance from a dealer gives you strong protection: under the Consumer Contracts Regulations you generally have 14 days from delivery to change your mind about a distance purchase, on top of your Consumer Rights Act protections on quality and description. Ask the dealer to confirm their distance-selling terms in writing — a good one will volunteer them.
